Set in the rural south of the early twentieth century, Ruby’s Pick is a story of working hard and reaping the benefits. As the four sisters help their papa pick the peas in the field, they dream of what goodies they can choose in the mercantile bartering with their earned bushels. When Ruby doesn’t have enough peas for her pick, the sisters add their leftovers and they all share in the surprising results, for years to come.

Always the storycatcher, Gretchen based this picture book on a childhood story told by Ruby Courtney. The book is dedicated to Ruby.
